LEADERS' CORNER
Helps for
Lad and Crusader Leaders

You are a Lad Leader!!!
by Karl Bozeman

A leader of a lad Royal Ambassador chapter holds an important responsibility. The leader may very well hold the future (adult future) of these boys in his hand. You, leader, have been entrusted with the future of your church, denomination, and government. The boys in your Lad chapter will be young men (18-21) in the year 2020.

What do you need to know and do to be an effective Christian counselor for these boys?

First: You must know Jesus Christ.
Second: Know yourself. Know yourself well enough to commit time, knowledge and effort to be an effective counselor.
Third: Know the Lads you are working with.

  • Find out about their home environment. Visit in the homes and get acquainted with their parents.

  • Learn the characteristics of Lad boys.

  • Recognize that Lads are growing rapidly and their large muscles need stretching and relaxing often. They are active and require more movement than Crusaders.

  • Remember that his attention span is short (about one minute for each year of age.)

  • Lads are looking for a hero--a person to model--and you may be that person. (How would you like to have 12 boys just like you in the chapter?) Lads will have activities and you can be in charge of those activities if you plan well.

Fourth: Preparation is the key to good experiences with Lads.

  • Use the Royal Ambassador Planbook. Set goals for this week, month, and year.

  • Study the materials in Lad Leader magazine. Make notes to follow.

  • Get materials ready in advance for the meeting.

  • Arrange the room with the chairs in a semicircle so you can see the face (and hands) of each boy.

Fifth: Suggestions to you as leader.

  • Know the needs and skill levels of the boys.

  • Sit on the boys' level in order to maintain eye contact and to reflect a relaxed atmosphere.
