Royal Ambassadors Supports Lion’s Club and Free Clinic

By John Burris

For the last three months six boys (grades 1-6) from Fellowship Baptist Church (1700 89th St) have been actively seeking donations of old prescription glasses.  They had a two-fold mission:  1) To donate the glasses to the Lion’s Club, which refurbishes the glass and repairs the rims and arms.  Then they give the glasses away to meet local needs in the community.  2)  To support a free medical clinic that will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church on June 19th from 10am to 2pm.  The medical clinic will attempt to meet medical, dental, and vision care of those without medical insurance.  Used clothing and food will also be given away.  The free medical clinic will receive over a thousand refurbished eyeglasses from the Lion’s Club to help support the clinic.

The clinic will primarily focus on the poor and un-insured in Kenosha County and is supported by several medical, dental, and eye care professionals in the community.   Interpreters from the Spanish Center will be available to assist anyone with translation needs.

The Royal Ambassadors (RA’s) is a club, sponsored by the North American Mission Board and the Southern Baptist Convention, aimed at teaching boys grades 1-6 about missionaries throughout the world and what we can do locally to support a global effort to carry the message of Christ around the world.  The RA’s meet every Sunday night at 6pm.  The RA’s collected and turned over 45 pairs of glasses and 28 glass cases.

Kenosha Noon Lions receive 45 glasses and 28 cases from the Fellowship Baptist Church Royal Ambassadors.

RA’s count out the glasses and prepare to present them to the Kenosha Noon Lion’s Club for refurbishment.

As part of his advancement, James Crowley, 6th grade, wrote to one of the missionaries featured in his Crusader Magazine.  Rev. Matthew Smyzer of the Baptist Fellowship Center in Louisville, KY responded and told James that he was glad to hear from him.  Bro. Smyzer also called me and I asked him if there was anything our Royal Ambassadors could do for him and his ministry.  He told me that when someone comes to the Baptist Fellowship Center for the first time, they are usually opening a new door in their lives.  He felt that when that happens, they should actually open a new door. He asked if we could help raise funds to purchase and install a new doorway in their facility.  I told him that we always raised funds around Christmas with our R.A. Post Office. We also used our new “Pennies for Heaven” collection bottle.  Please see the attached photo of our R.A.s and a couple of the leaders.  The Post Office raised $380 and the Bottle raised $220 for a total of $600.  This amount was sent to the Baptist Fellowship Center in early January, 2004.
We have men that go out and work on church building projects and they said that they would be willing to go to Louisville and help install the new doorway when one is purchased.  Our men work under the title of Construction for Christ.  The Baptist Fellowship Center is an intercity ministry. May this new door lead to the Gospel and to Jesus, the only door to Heaven.

By the way, the boys are holding some of the R.A. sailboats that they constructed during December and raced in early January.  We held races the first two Wednesday nights that we met in January, 2004.
